8-Week Blacksmithing, Ongoing

580.00 704.00

Save by registering for this 8-week series of 2-hour private classes! You will start with the basic fundamentals of blacksmithing then continue to build your skills and knowledge along the way. At the start, you and the instructor will design a course profile based upon your goals. You may decide to create many small items or plan on one more intricate end project. Either way, our instructor will guide you to your goal while you also having lots of fun!

Here is what will be covered:

·        Forge set-up and how it works

·        The use of basic tools (anvil, hammer, tongs, cutter, punch, vise, etc.)

·        Basic techniques including drawing out and tapering, twisting, upsetting, punching, fullering, hot cutting, splitting, and riveting

·        How to put a basic oil finish on a completed piece of work

·        Tool control, the characteristics of the iron, how to plan and execute a project (what will the end product look like, and how do you get there?)

·        Basic safety practices in the smithy

Materials Students Should Bring:                Students must wear long sleeve shirts and pants that are made of natural fibers and naturally flame retardant. Also, safety glasses and leather work gloves must be worn while in the work shop. Hearing protection is recommended for some operations, but is optional. Safety gear will be available for purchase at the general store if students do not have their own.

Minimum Age: 12

Once you've registered, we'll be in touch to set up a day and time that works for you and our instructor. Classes do not need to be taken in consecutive weeks. We will be flexible with scheduling.
